Leyland Motors of the town Leyland i Lancashire i Nord west England startade as `The Lancashire Steam Motor Company `in 1896 making steam trucks ,1904 came bensin trucks and 1925 started with Diesel , full direct injection Diesels by 1933 , they took over Albion in 1951 , Scammell in 1955 ,Standard Triumph in 1961 then the ACV group in 1962 ( AEC ,Mauldsley, Crossley and Thornycroft ) also Rover in 1966 and BMC (Austin Morris MG )in 1968 along with GUY and Jaguar , over 90% of production was for export around the world ,trucks,Aveling Barford loading shovels ect as well as Leyland busses and cars , and an English haulage man wanting a new truck could wait two years for it ! , a Leyland `Beaver` tractor was over £4000.00 in 1967 a Volvo F86 was £3000.00 ! and the Volvo was in stock ! , many customers bought Volvo and the many strikes at Austin Rover caused the car divisions to bleed dry the truck sector ,in 1975 the firm was taken into state ownership but lost so much money was sold to DAF in 1987, DAF went bust in 1993 and was saved by the Dutch and Belgian taxpayer , Leyland then became 100% British again and built trucks for DAF , in 1998 Leyland was taken over by Paccar (Paccar had bought DAF in 1996) the final true Leylands the T45 from 1980 were excellent but too late to save the firm , Alan.
