In 1967 Volvo and Scania arrived in the UK, Volvo with the F.86 & F.88, Scania with the Scania-Vabis 76, both trucks were comfortable and quiet compared with English lorries, we however continued to build lorries with their own ancient engines or Gardner and Cummins engines, and very noisy fibreglass cabs or steel cabs that disintegrated with the first rain, but they were loved by their drivers......and still are

some were maybe nice to look at, but were very difficult to work with, lorry makers in England were too slow to learn what was required of them, and were overtaken by imported trucks such as Volvo, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Magirus Deutz, DAF, M.A.N, Fiat (Iveco), Berliet, Renault and even for a brief time the U.S Macks and White trucks,
Because we are such a small island the need for sleeper cabs didn't seem a high priority for the English lorry manufacturers, so many operators who wanted sleeper cabs either turned to imported trucks or converted standard day cab lorries.
By the time the manufacturers realised what operators wanted it was too late, so from the 1980s many truck makers went out of business or were taken over by European or American motor giants
