The 1950s saw a huge range of FWD trucks for both on and off-highway use, including sleeper-cab 6x4 tractors for line-haul work. Specialized multi-wheel drive trucks like the Tractioneer appeared in the '50s and '60s, plus the unusual Teracnizer for desert use. From 1960 the company became the FWD Corporation, and in 1963 took over the Seagrave Corporation which specialized in fire-fighting equipment. Production of specialized trucks and fire appliances has continued into into the 1990s. Considerable numbers of American FWD trucks were shipped to the UK during World War I, many finding their way into civilian ownership after the war. A British version, the British Quad was built under licence from 1918, using a Dorinan engine. In 1927 FWD Motors launched a 6x6 powered by a 6-cylinder Dorman. Later, in 1929, FWD entered an agreement with AEC of Southall under which the trucks were fitted with AEC engines instead of Dormans. By then the British-built FWDs were so far removed from the original American-sourced trucks that the FWD name was dropped, and from 1931 the trucks were renamed Hardy.
