Hej Per, In the 1960`s Leyland and some other English makers advised that double drive would be needed for over 30 tons totalweight ,with regard to traction issues on snow and ice ect , even though it was always pointed out that Sweden worked OK with single drive at weights of around 50 /60 ton !, but as can be seen in the images some in England used double drive for 32 ton total weight ,even though the legal payload was reduced and fuel economy was not so good , most of Leylands exports to Iceland ,Norway ,Denmark ,Belgium ,Poland and East Germany ect used 4x2 single drive as in England , when the UK total weights were raised to 38 tonnes in 1983 only Foden thought tandem drive was needed , MVH Alan.

In end of the 50 th some big Inustries in Sweden asked for tandem but S-V was not interested and Volvo bought some Hendiksson tanden from US. First until 58 S-V had tandem on the program after they had constructed the heavy 6x6 truck "Myrsloken" for the swedish army the year before. That tandem was built on parts from Timken. But already at end of 50 th a couple of S-V was re-built with tandem by help of a S-V distributor. Those were Leyland tandem.

Ja Per , the Foden `twin load` an 8x4 with a normal trailer coupling on the back , not many were sold , most went to Harveys of Bristol as wine tankers , MVH Alan.

I have always been interested in trucking books.

Hej Lars -Gunnar , I have been buying truck books for over 45 years , the old are the most accurate , modern writers don`t know so much ! try Nynehead books for current titles and Pooks motor books for old out of print titles and old brochures ect , I wrote a series for the magazine Vintage Roadscene and some for Heritage Commercials , these are available also as back issues , MVH Alan Fixter .
