Nice photos. yeah, it is a chame so many fine english makes are gone. F86 were more popular in England than Sweden. I have seen in other forums how these trucks seems be underpowered for the load they carryed many times but they as drowe then loved that truck. We could order a 3-axle truck and carry timber with that truck but i think it never have happen. There have always been F88 trucks as had done that job with a 3-axle trailer fitted because Swedish owners want the heaviest and strongest they could gets from Volvo or Scania. N86 could carry timber but only alone a fitted trailer may be too heavy. We have some large hills to take advantage over all over Sweden exept Skåne as is more flat.

I'll try to find a pic of the first Volvo with the 'bubble cab' to come to England, it was a 1964 Volvo L.475.

The F.86 in your picture is a 1967 model, the 'E' at the end of the registration number tells you the year.

'A' was 1963, 'B' 1964 and so on, some letters were not used such as 'I', 'O' and 'Z', the letter 'Q' was used for special vehicles when the year of manufacture was not known.

In 1983 the year letter was put at the start of the plate......'A' 1983/4, 'B' 1984/5.........Just to confuse things even more these letters changed in June instead of January so it was more difficult to know the year of the car.

Here´s the same F86 in 2007 together with a modern Mercedes, and I´m the lucky driver of Hutchinsons old truck :D
Is it still possible to see from what year the Mercedes is from?

That F.86 is superb, the first dragbil I drove was the same as that one, comfortable and quiet (apart from the turbo whistle)

The 'new' registration numbers are also difficult, they started ?? 51 ??? which was from September 2001 - March 2002
?? 02 ??? March 2002 - September 2002
?? 52 ??? September 2002 - March 2003..................

So at the moment we are on ?? 59 ??? plates, September 2009 - March 2010
The DAF I drive is FJ 55 OOD first registered Sept. 2005. The first 2 letters (FJ) refer to the area in England it was registered (FJ=Nottingham) the last 3 letters are random.

So the Merc in your pic VX 51 KGN was registered 2001-2 in the Severn Valley area (Worcester)
VX = Severn Valley......51 = 2001 -2002...........KGN are random letters.

I need to lay down now........I'm confused :?

This webpage may help.

Here is the truck my little avatar came from, it is me as a younger man at the wheel, being a tourist on a small island near Göteborg in 1977, I had many weekends in Göteborg, in the summer I took the dragbil sightseeing.

Bild

In 1978 I had this M.A.N 16.280 new, I came to Sweden most weeks, usually arriving Monday and departing Thursday, sometimes I had a 2 week trip, Göteborg - Lund - Helsingborg - Malmö - Stockholme - Jarfalla - Tumba - Södertälje - Eskilstuna - Göteborg, always good fun.

The small arrow points to something Bo Norvinge may recognise.............I was a member of the Cowboy Club 8) , something I had forgotten about.

Here are two pics of London Brick trucks, I saw a picture of a London Brick AEC Mammoth Major BEW 605 in the Dubbla framaxlar thread from Anders Ason, I live in the same town as the London Brick Co. although they don't make bricks here any more, it was once the biggest brick factory in Europe, they had over 200 trucks.
BEW 605 is very much alive and goes to truck rallies in the summer.

c.1945 -1950 an ex - military GMC tipper and a Bedford of the London Brick Co.
Bild

Another ex-military Chevy tipper, after the war trucks in england were in short supply, so many old military trucks were used by civilian companies.

Corgi have made many models of LBC trucks.....I have made even more!
I have more London Brick pictures if you want me to post them here.

Who doesn`t remember Cowboy Club?. Almost every longdistance driver were member in the late -70`s. I drove several lorrys who had the CB-radio, but I wasn`t a member. The reach of the CB`s were not impressive.
